Part of The Hinabi Project’s mission is working with its Philippine partners to develop an apprenticeship training program for young weavers. Young weavers face multiple competing issues around school, social life and family traditions that may make training with master weavers complicated and unsustainable. Developing an apprenticeship program, within the framework of community realities and needs, is one way of addressing these concerns. A master weaver training program paired with NGO and governmental support for needed resources can become the basis for a community-based training program.
“Weaving is more than a craft and artisan endeavor. It is also an embodiment of textile thinking, a mental process of problem-solving while making art through fiber. Weaving should be introduced into the school system as an exemplary activity in the STEM curriculum.”
